Having conquered all other six kingdoms, Ch'in Shih-huang-ti, the first emperor in the history of China (221-210 BC) thus successfully united China into a whole. Immensely proud of his own achievement, he then made a royal visit to Mount Thai in the east, where he was told a certain fairy queen in the west had a magic drink, which could make those lucky few live a long, long life. He immediately sent his men for it. Thousands of years passed, however, no one ever returned.
As son of Heaven to rule the empire, a powerful king as him is supposed to have anything at his command. What a shame without the drink! In a rage, he rode his imperial carriage west for the drink. While passing Mount Cuiping, which was believed to be a fairyland of immortals, he was attracted by a flowing fragrance of liquor in the air. He then stopped to satisfy his curiosity. Tracing the fragrance to its origin, he found a couple of old men with white hair and rubicund face, sitting and drinking together. He was then told what they were drinking was Wu-liang-ye, a magic liquor for longevity and happiness. Emperor Ch'in Shih-huang-ti was overjoyed: “The nectar I’ve been dreaming of all those years is right here!”
Now we present this emperor-dreamed nectar, Wu-liang-ye, for you and our posterity to enjoy, now and forever!
